What can the Logbook app actually do?
An overview before installing: what the app does automatically, what you enter yourself and what you can do with it afterwards.
Updated: July 2026
„I have kept my logbook on paper so far. What exactly does the app take off my hands before I install it?“
In short
Logbook writes your logbook largely on its own. The app records your track in the background, creates entries at an interval you choose and fills them with date, time, GPS position, course and speed over ground, distance covered, engine hours and the weather at your position. You only add what a device cannot know: manoeuvres, crew changes, observations.
What the app records automatically
Automatic entries are created without any action — even when the app is not on screen. Recorded values include GPS position and accuracy, course and speed over ground, the distance since the last entry, engine hours as well as weather, air pressure, wind, cloud cover, air and water temperature, precipitation and wave height.
Instead of bare coordinates, geocoding writes a readable place into the entry, such as “0.2 nm NW of Celice lighthouse”. If you have an NMEA interface on board, your own readings go into the log as well: wind, depth, speed through the water and water temperature.
What you enter yourself
Manoeuvres take seconds as quick entries: cast off, sails set, tack, gybe, first reef, anchor weighed and any custom entries you like. Several actions can be combined into one quick manoeuvre. Free text, photos and maintenance entries with a due date round off the trip.
What is possible afterwards
At the end of a trip you get statistics on nautical miles, engine and sailing hours and your best day. The logbook can be printed and signed as a PDF or exported as CSV, GPX, KML and SQLite. Your data stays your data.
Who is the app for?
For sailors and motorboaters who want a complete logbook without writing all the time — from a weekend trip to a long voyage. Installing is free; all features are available with an optional yearly subscription.
