I'm a sailor from Munich and have been developing the Logbook app for iOS and Android since 2012. Since 2026 I've devoted myself to it full-time. I build it on my own, without investors and without advertising. The app is funded entirely by the people who use it.

I took up sailing in 2005. Today I hold the SBF See and SBF Binnen, the SKS and the SSS (German boating licences for recreational craft, which also qualify holders to work as commercial skippers), and I'm usually skippering charter yachts in the Adriatic. I don't own a boat. That's why I know the situation of many users so well: a different boat every year, a new crew, and still a complete logbook.

The idea came to me on a cruise in 2011. To me, a logbook belongs to seafaring just like lighthouses do — a bit of romance and an obligation at the same time. But I wanted to keep it digitally, and back then there was no suitable app. It was really only meant for me. In 2012 I took the first version with me on my next cruise.

I was surprised that so many sailors were willing to pay for it. I was even more surprised by how many good ideas came from users. They have made the app what it is today, and many features go straight back to their requests.

For more than 20 years I worked at Atos IT Solutions and Services as a project manager for international IT infrastructure projects. I oversaw petabyte-scale data migrations, moved thousands of servers and led international teams through critical changeovers (certified IPMA Level C, PRINCE2 Practitioner and Professional Scrum Master). Along the way I learnt how valuable data is and how important it is to be able to get at it at any time.

That's why the Logbook app has no advertising and no data harvesting. You can export all your data at any time — as a ready-made PDF, as CSV or directly as an SQLite database. Your logbook stays yours, even in 20 years' time.

I've been building software for a while, by the way: my first website, kneipen-suche.com, went online in 2002. Today it only survives in the Wayback Machine.
