Glossary

These are the terms used in the app. Each term is used consistently for the same thing and always describes exactly the same – so you always know what is meant. Where British English differs, the UK term is shown below the US term.

app
🇺🇸automatic entry: An entry that’s created automatically while recording is on, based on one of the intervals you’ve set up.
🇬🇧automatic entry (UK): An entry created automatically by auto recording, based on one of the intervals you’ve set up.
🇺🇸boat status: Your boat status, e.g. at anchor, docked, sailing, motoring, motorsailing, hauled out, and so on.
🇬🇧status (UK): The boat’s status, e.g. at anchor, moored, sailing, motoring, motor sailing, hauled out, etc.
🇺🇸boat status change: A change in your boat status, see boat status.
🇬🇧status change (UK): A change in the boat’s status – see status.
COG: Short for Course Over Ground.
🇺🇸Course Over Ground: The nautical term used to tell it apart from Course Through Water.
🇬🇧Course Over Ground (UK): The nautical term used to distinguish it from Course Through Water.
🇺🇸Course Through Water: The nautical term used to tell it apart from Course Over Ground.

CTW: Short for Course Through Water.
🇺🇸engine hours: Running hours for the engines permanently installed in your boat.

🇺🇸entry: An entry in the logbook. Every entry shows up as a row on the first tab of the app.

🇺🇸entry type: The type of an entry, e.g. manual entry, automatic entry, or maintenance entry. Each type looks different on the first tab.

geocoding: Turning a position (coordinates) into a location (text).
🇺🇸location: Where you are, described in words and generated by geocoding. Example: “3 NM west of XY Lighthouse.”
🇬🇧location (UK): Where you are, described in words and generated by geocoding. Example: “3 NM west of XY Lighthouse”.
🇺🇸log entry: Same as entry, just spelled out more clearly for places where it could otherwise be mixed up with a different kind of entry (e.g. an entry in the tank statistics).

logbook
🇺🇸logbook settings: You can set up as many logbooks as you like in the app. Some settings, like the number of water tanks, only apply to the logbook you’ve currently selected. So these are the settings that switch automatically when you change to a different logbook.
🇬🇧logbook settings (UK): You can create lots of logbooks in the app, and some settings, such as the number of water tanks, only apply to the logbook that’s currently selected. These are the settings that change automatically when you switch to a different logbook.
🇺🇸maintenance entry: An entry that’s highlighted in color in the app and holds info about planned tasks or maintenance work (upcoming or already done). For example, so you don’t forget to swap out the zincs before launching next season.
🇬🇧maintenance entry (UK): An entry that’s highlighted in colour in the app and holds information about planned jobs or maintenance work (upcoming or already completed). For example, so you don’t forget to change the sacrificial anodes before launching next season.
manual entry: An entry you created yourself, or an automatic entry that you’ve edited or added to.
🇺🇸notes: The text field where you can add your own notes, like “Spotted dolphins” or “Bearing on powerboat to the SW is steady, possible risk of collision.” When you use a quick maneuver, its text lands here too.
🇬🇧remarks (UK): The text field where you can add your own remarks, such as “Dolphins spotted” or “Bearing on motorboat to the SW is steady, possible risk of collision”. When you use a quick manoeuvre, its text ends up here too.
🇺🇸position: Where you are, shown as geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude). Example: “48° 12.3' N 012° 14.5' W.”

🇺🇸quick maneuvers: Saved texts you can reuse again and again to create an entry in a snap. A quick maneuver can optionally be linked to a boat status change too.
🇬🇧quick manoeuvres (UK): Pre-saved texts you can reuse regularly to create an entry quickly. Optionally, a quick manoeuvre can also be linked to a status change.
🇺🇸recording: The feature that automatically creates entries at the intervals you’ve set in the settings. You can always tell recording is on when you see the blue border in the app.

SOG: Short for Speed Over Ground.

🇺🇸tank: Tanks on board, e.g. water tank, fuel tank, gray water tank.

🇺🇸tools: The tab with handy extras, like deleting lots of entries across an entire time period, running geocoding after the fact, or a list of maintenance jobs based on your maintenance entries.

🇺🇸trip log: Distances on the trip log are the distance you’ve covered through the water, i.e. based on Speed Through Water (STW).

🇺🇸underway: The COLREGs term from Rule 3: a vessel is underway when it isn’t at anchor, made fast to the shore, or aground.
