What can I do if I forgot to start Auto recording on iOS?

Don’t stop Auto recording while you’re on the water. Ideally, switch off “Start/stop Auto recording on status change”, as shown in the screenshot. Creating automatic entries at anchor is no problem at all: if the interval is set to, say, ¼ mile and one entry per hour, only the hourly entry is created at anchor, because you’re not moving. If you forget to change the status when leaving the anchorage, entries keep being created in the background — with the status “At anchor”, admittedly — but that’s easy to fix afterwards. Say you left the bay at 09:45 and notice at 10:45: open the last entry at anchor, i.e. the first one before 09:45, change the status from “At anchor” to “Motoring” and enable the option to correct the following entries as well.

So you don’t forget to start Auto recording in the morning, you can also use iOS geofencing to get a notification when you leave the anchorage — it reminds you that Auto recording isn’t running yet. More details in the guide Mitteilung, wenn die App nicht aufzeichnet (in German).
